Board President Lanny Layman began the Convocation by giving the invocation and opening comments. Over 400 students representing the combined Central High School and Lake View High School bands, choirs, and orchestras performed the "Star Spangled Banner" and "From Sea to Shining Sea." As a special highlight of convocation, Superintendent Dr. Carol Ann Bonds unveiled our new district motto: In Pursuit of Excellence.
SAISD was honored to have Grant Teaff, the Executive Director of the American Football Coaches Association, as the keynote speaker. A former San Angeloan, he both played and coached at Angelo State University. Many remember Coach Teaff as head coach of the Baylor Bears from 1972 until 1993. The author of five books, Teaff shared his leadership techniques and keys to success with the audience of over 2000. He presented Superintendent Bonds with a copy of his latest book, Grant Teaff with the Master Coaches, naming her a "master coach."
Campuses and departments sat together during the event, enjoying the camaraderie and adding to the spirit of excitement that filled the arena with many standing ovations. Employee groups were recognized by Assistant Superintendents Jeff Bright and Joanne Rice, who provided information about campus and department successes as groups were announced. Convocation came to a close with the benediction and a special blessing for new teachers given by Joanne Rice.
