School Board Presented With New Bond Plan
August 7, 2008
San Angelo ISD school board members were presented with a proposal for a possible bond proposition Monday night. The proposal, which was drawn up by the district's Facility Advisory Committee, spells out in detail renovations and new construction projects that would be included in a potential November bond election.
In all, eleven campuses would benefit from the proposed plan. These campuses include Holiman, Bradford, Reagan, Glenmore, San Jacinto, Santa Rita, Crockett and Goliad elementary schools, Lee Middle School and Central and Lake View high schools. Improvements would include renovations and repairs to existing facilities; new additions; mechanical, electrical, and plumbing upgrades; making campuses compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act; and other site improvements.
One of the most notable changes included in the proposal is for renovations at Central High School. Unlike last year's bond proposition which, if approved, would have rebuilt a new Central High School on the south side of San Angelo, this new proposal will utilize most of the current school's existing infrastructure at its present location. While some older buildings would be need to be removed, most of the existing buildings on the campus would remain and be renovated and revitalized. Drawings included in the plan also show the main entrance to the campus moved to Caddo street along the Houston Harte Expressway frontage road. New science labs and a new administrative building would be constructed near this new entry on the north side of the campus. Also included in the plan is increased parking, security improvements, technology upgrades, and renovated outdoor areas and new water friendly landscaping.
A second proposition has also been proposed that would include additional work to be done at Central High School including a new competition gym, a new cafeteria, and a new area for special education. Proposition 2 also includes renovations focusing on athletics including a renovated Didrickson gym/Natatorium, renovated Gehrig and Training Room, and renovated Trevino Gym.
Details of the two propositions are still being discussed and are subject to change before the bond election is called. The deadline for calling a bond election is August 26 and board members are expected to vote to set the election at a special board meeting on August 25. In the meantime, the task force will continue to meet and finalize their recommendations. A bond workshop has been scheduled for August 14 to further discuss the bond proposal. Architects will be available for questions.
