Bond Election Set for November

August 27, 2008

The San Angelo ISD board of trustees has called for a November bond election. The board voted Monday night to approve a recommendation by the district's Facility Advisory Committee calling for a two-part bond proposal totaling $149 million.

Voters will have the opportunity to vote on two separate propostitions on November 4 that if approved would provide funding for renovations and new construction projects at numerous campuses.

The first proposition is for $117 million and would pay for work at eleven schools. The campuses that would benefit from the proposed plan include Holiman, Bradford, Reagan, Glenmore, San Jacinto, Santa Rita, Crockett and Goliad elementary schools, Lee Middle School and Central and Lake View high schools. Improvements would include renovations and repairs to existing facilities; new additions; mechanical, electrical, and plumbing upgrades; making campuses compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act; and other site improvements.

Proposition 1 calls for numerous renovations at Central High School. The plan would utilize most of the current school's existing infrastructure at its present location. While some older buildings would be need to be removed, most of the existing buildings on the campus would remain and be renovated and revitalized. Drawings included in the plan show the main entrance to the campus moved to Caddo street along the Houston Harte Expressway frontage road. New science labs and a new administrative building would be constructed near this new entry on the north side of the campus. Also included in the plan is increased parking, security improvements, technology upgrades, and renovated outdoor areas and new water friendly landscaping.

The second Proposition is for $32 million for additional work to be done at Central High School including a new competition gym and cafeteria as well as renovations on the existing natatorium. Proposition 2 could only pass if Proposition 1 is approved.

The Facility Advisory Committee has created a packet that includes detailed lists of improvements that would be made to each of the schools included in the proposal. The plan includes drawings of each campus indicating where renovation and new construction are being recommended as well as estimated costs for each project.
