Changes in Texas Immunization Requirements Effect Kindergarten, 7th Grade

Beginning August 1, 2009, all students entering kindergarten, statewide, will be required to have two (2) doses of Hepatitis A, two (2) doses of Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR), and two (2) doses of Varicella vaccine. A written statement from a parent (or legal guardian or managing conservator), school nurse, or a physician attesting to the child's positive history of Varicella disease (chicken pox), or of Varicella immunity, is acceptable instead of either dose of Varicella vaccine. The Hepatitis A doses have previously not been required, and only one dose of Varicella has previously been required.

Also beginning August 1, 2009, all students entering 7th grade, statewide, will be required to have two (2) doses of Varicella vaccine. A written statement from a parent (or legal guardian or managing conservator), school nurse, or a physician attesting to the child's positive history of Varicella disease (chicken pox), or of Varicella immunity, is acceptable instead of either dose of Varicella vaccine.

Additional requirements for 7th graders beginning August 1, 2009, include one (1) dose of meningococcal vaccine and one (1) dose of Tdap. Students in 7th grade will be required to have a booster of Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, and "a cellular" pertussis, also known as whooping cough), only if it has been five (5) years since their last dose of tetanus-containing vaccine.

Students in grades 8-12 are required to have a booster of Tdap if it has been ten (10) years since their previous dose of a tetanus-containing vaccine. Td is acceptable in lieu of Tdap if a contraindication to pertussis exists.

It is a Texas state law that immunizations must be up to date in order for a student to attend school. It is the responsibility of the parent/guardian to provide the updated records to the student's campus.
