SAISD Celebrates Red Ribbon Week

November 5, 2009

San Angelo ISD schools joined in the national celebration of Red Ribbon Week, October 26-30.

Red Ribbon celebrations serve to raise awareness of the dangers of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs, and encourage prevention, early intervention, and treatment services. Red Ribbon Week is the largest, most visible prevention awareness campaign in the United States.

The Alcohol and Drug Abuse Council of the Concho Valley added to the spirit of the week by sponsoring the "Dress Your Campus in Red" Contest. Twenty campuses participated in the event, all vying for the top prize. A team of judges visited each school on October 28 to determine the winners.

In the elementary school competition, Goliad took first place and received $250 and free ice cream for all students. McGill came in second place and received $175, while Belaire Elementary took the $100 third place prize. Crockett and Bonham each received honorable mention and $50 gift certificates.

Lincoln Middle School captured the middle school prize of $250, with Lake View claiming the high school award of $250.
