CHS JROTC Display Plane Gets "Face Lift"

November 2, 2010

The Central High School Air Force Junior ROTC's T-33-A display plane, just to the east of Powell Hall, has received a "face lift" from artists and painters Mr. Curtis Jenkins and Mr. Sam Munoz. The two local citizens used a lift provided by Mr Brad Kuykendal of RSC Rentals and paint donated by a local paint store to restore the badly faded paint on the plane. Mr. Jenkins, who is also a designer, provided additional identity art work by adding a new paint scheme to the sides of the plane.

The work was approved by Lt Col Lopez, AF JROTC Unit TX-936 Senior Aerospace Science Instructor, and Central High School principal Mr Bill Waters. The labor, equipment, and paint were estimated at a cost of more than $5,000 but were provided cost-free by all the participants in the project.

The plane was previously used for instruction at Texas State Technical College in Waco, TX. During the summer of 1997, Central ROTC instructors Lt. Col. Raul Lopez, CMSgt. Terry Savoie, and MSgt. George Marquez, along with cadet volunteers, traveled on weekends to Waco to disassemble the plane. Once disassembled, they called on a local businessman and the Goodfellow AFB Transportation Squadron to transport the parts to San Angelo. Upon arrival at Powell Hall, cadets sanded the entire plane and repainted it before it was reassembled. A team of volunteers then mounted the plane on its pedestal. The engine and other parts that were no longer needed were donated to Goodfellow AFB.

Central High School Air Force Junior ROTC Unit TX-936 instructors, cadets, and Central High School Staff deeply appreciate the donation of time, labor, and supplies provided by all of the contributors involved in the project.
