"Team San Angelo" Prepares for New School Year
August 24, 2012
"Team San Angelo" was the theme of this year's back-to-school convocation which was held Wednesday, August 22 at the Foster Communications Coliseum. The event welcomed all of the district's employees to the new school year and provided an atmosphere of celebration honoring each campus and department.
Eric Alexander, this year's keynote speaker, is a skier, climber, and mountaineer who has achieved his goals while playing an instrumental role in helping others to achieve their own. On May 25, 2001, Eric defied the odds and scaled Mt. Everest guiding his blind friend Erik Weihenmayer to the 29,035 ft. summit. Eric related his own experiences with mountain climbing to the challenges teachers face everyday. Eric's inspirational stories of teamwork encouraged SAISD employees to overcome the "Everests" in their own lives and redefine the limits of what they can achieve.
Other highlights of the morning included a combined Central High School and Lake View High School JROTC Color Guard as well as performances of patriotic music selections by combined high school bands, orchestras, and choirs. Former student Zak Linzy performed a poem called "What Teachers Make" by Taylor Mali and 10th grader Ashley Terrill sang "Show Me How".
Personnel from Goodfellow AFB were special guests of honor.
