SAISD Convocation Kicks Off School Year
August 26, 2013
"Countdown to Teamwork" was the theme of this year's back-to-school convocation which was held Thursday, August 22 at the Foster Communications Coliseum. The event welcomed all of the district's employees to the new school year and provided an atmosphere of celebration honoring each campus and department.
Texas-born Col. Mike Mullane, this year's keynote speaker, is a West Point graduate who has flown aboard the Discovery and Atlantis Space Shuttles, where he logged over 350 hours. He flew more than 130 combat missions in Vietnam before being named a Mission Specialist with the first group of Space Shuttle Astronauts. Col. Mullane is a member of the International Space Hall of Fame and was awarded NASA's Space Flight Medal. His inspiring lessons on teamwork were derived from his experiences while working for NASA and his missions aboard space shuttle flights.
During the event, Assistant Superintendent Jeff Bright brought laughter to the crowd with his version of Mayhem from the popular All-State commercials and the Mini-Mayhems, portrayed by four SAISD students.
Other highlights of the morning included a combined Central High School and Lake View High School JROTC Color Guard as well as performances of patriotic music selections by combined high school bands, orchestras, and choirs.
Personnel from Goodfellow Air Force Base were special guests of honor.
