House Bill 5 Brings Changes to Texas High School Graduation Plans
July 18, 2014
Texas House Bill 5 was passed on June 10, 2013 during the 83rd legislative session. House Bill 5 made significant changes to high school graduation requirements by creating one diploma that affords all students a variety of post-secondary education and workforce opportunities. Starting in school year 2014-2015 with the Class of 2018 (incoming 9th graders), students must complete what is known as the Foundation High School Plan and must earn an endorsement in one of five areas:
- Business & Industry
- Arts & Humanities
- STEM (emphasis on math and science)
- Public Services
- Multi-Disciplinary Services
Last spring, incoming 9th graders in SAISD attended presentations of the new graduation plan prior to selecting classes for the coming school year. In addition, parents had the opportunity to attend information sessions regarding House Bill 5’s graduation requirements.
