SAISD Convocation Kicks Off School Year
August 18, 2016
San Angelo ISD held its annual back-to-school convocation on Wednesday, August 17 at the Foster Communications Coliseum. The event welcomed all of the district's employees to the new school year and provided an atmosphere of celebration honoring each campus and department.
The keynote speaker for this year's event was inspirational speaker and best-selling author Liz Murray. Murray shared her story of how she transformed her life of despair into an inspiring journey of determination, hope and hard-won success.
Murray captivated the audience with stories of growing up as the child of drug-addicted parents and becoming homeless at the age of 15. She then told about meeting the mentor who changed her life. Encouraged by her mentor, and determined not to be defined by her circumstances, Murray earned her high school diploma and won a scholarship to Harvard University that turned her bleak circumstances into a future filled with limitless possibility.
Inspired by her own mentor, Murray encouraged those in attendance to never underestimate the power of influencing the lives of other people. She told the educators in the room that "You never know when your students are one interaction with you away from seeing things differently. Show them that they matter one interaction at a time, and those are the ones that can be the breakthrough."
Other highlights of the morning included a combined Central High School and Lake View High School JROTC Color Guard as well as performances of patriotic music selections by combined high school bands, orchestras, and choirs.
Personnel from Goodfellow Air Force Base were special guests of honor.
