Child Nutrition Regulations and Guidelines
SAISD follows the guidelines for the School Meal Initiative for Healthy Children (SMI). Breakfast and lunch menus are averaged over a week and meet the RDA of the age or grade group they are intended for. Each week the breakfast and lunch menus meet the target goal for calories, 30% or fewer calories from fat, 10% or fewer calories from saturated fat, and exceed the target goal for protein, calcium, iron, vitamin A, and vitamin C.The SAISD Food Service Department utilizes several strategies to insure that the students receive nutritious meals each day. San Angelo I.S.D. follows the enhanced menu planning system to meet the USDA nutritional standards established for school meals. Product specifications and production methods are utilized to improve the nutritional value of the meals. Below are a few of the major steps that SAISD has taken to meet the School Meal Initiative for Healthy Children:
- Only 1% white milk and nonfat flavored milk is offered with meals.
- All products are baked and not fried.
- Foods containing more than 23 grams of fat per serving size are not served more than once per week.
- Trans fat information is required on product specifications and the purchase of products containing trans fat has been reduced.
- Additional whole-grain products have been added to the menu
- All canned fruits are packed in water or light syrup.
- Recipes have been revised to lower the fat and sugar content of prepared foods.
- The servings of fruits, vegetables, and grain breads have been increased.
- All franks and corndogs are made from turkey as well as baked ham.
