Chris Sloan, winner of H-E-B Excellence in Education Grand Prize
Chris Sloan, a third grade teacher at Belaire Elementary, was announced as the grand-prize winner in the Rising Star category of the 2007 H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards. The Rising Star Award recognizes teachers with less than 10 years of classroom teaching experience.
Sloan was one of only 10 grand-prize winners throughout Texas who were recognized at an awards ceremony in Austin on May 7. Sloan will receive $5,000 for himself and $5,000 for Belaire.
Last month, Sloan was named among 39 finalists who were selected from 2000 applicants throughout the state. Finalists participated in personal interviews before a panel of judges who selected the grand prize winners.
The H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards program was launched in 2002 in cooperation with the Texas Association of School Administrators as a positive way to support public education in Texas. The goal is to spotlight the great things going on in public schools and celebrate the work of Texas educators. The program has grown to be the state's largest monetary recognition program for Texas educators.
