Central Choir Students Excel at State Solo Contest

The Central Choir Department completed another dominant showing at the Texas State Solo and Ensemble Contest in Austin over Memorial Day weekend (Saturday, May 24). In solo competition, a school record 24 students out of 25 contestants received medals, including 15 superiors and 9 excellent ratings. Gold medals were awarded for superior ratings to Alek Alba, Adrian Chapa, Katie Clouser, Emily Ehlers, Elisa Gonzales, Matt Groth, Mary Lewis, Rachel Mariano, Luke Perkins, Kayla Ponder, Shane Sadler, Michel Tegeler, Cesar Trejo, Logan Wright, and Doug Yassen. Silver medals were awarded for excellent ratings to the following students: Sarah Caroline Billings, Claire Bryan, Ivan Cisneros, Andrea Maciejewski, Amy McCollum, Zach Schulze, Tori Trowbridge, and Katlin Wilcox. Sheena Gibbons, from the Central Freshman Campus, received an excellent rating on a piano solo.

In small ensemble competition, superior ratings (bronze medals) were awarded to seniors Katie Clouser, Emily Ehlers, Rachel Mariano, and Katlin Wilcox on the French quartet, "Il est bel et bon". Excellent ratings on girls' ensembles were awarded to Jill Cummings, Andrea Maciejewski, Michal Tegeler, and Tori Trowbridge on a girls' quartet. Matt Groth, Jessica Martinez, Amy McCollum, Ashley Ott, Aubrey Sloan, Cesar Trejo, Logan Wright, and Doug Yassen received an excellent rating in mixed madrigal competition, as well as Alek Alba, Adrian Chapa, Allison DeLaCruz, Kasey Dugger, Elisa Gonzalez, Shane Sadler, Zach Schulze, and Ellen Wehner.

The soloists were accompanied by Lani Schmidt and Wade Bray. Les Cole is the choir director at Central High School.

Students to Attend Leadership Academy

The following San Angelo ISD students have been selected to participate in Education in Action's summer 2008 Lone Star Leadership Academy programs in Dallas/Fort Worth (5th & 6th graders), Austin (6th & 7th graders) and Houston/Galveston (7th & 8th graders). Selection for the Lone Star Leadership Academy is based on a student's demonstrated academic success and leadership ability, an educator recommendation and involvement in school/community activities. During the weeklong residential Lone Star Leadership Academy programs, selected students join delegations of other distinguished students from across the state to develop leadership skills while learning about the great state of Texas. The Lone Star Leadership Academy provides a unique opportunity for outstanding students to learn about the Spirit of Texas and what it truly means to be from the Lone Star State.

Central High Student Named National Merit Scholar

Central High School senior Kristen McCollum has been named a National Merit Scholar by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

National Merit Scholars are chosen from a group of finalists based on their abilities, skills, and accomplishments including the Finalist's academic record, information about the school's curricula and grading system, two sets of test scores, school official's written recommendation, information about the student's activities and leadership, and the Finalist's own essay. Only 8,200 students nationwide are named as National Merit Scholars each year.

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation is a not-for-profit organization established in 1955 to conduct the annual National Merit Program. The scholarships it provides are underwritten by some 500 businesses and higher education institutions that share NMSC's goal of honoring the nation's scholastic champions and encouraging the pursuit of academic excellence.

Kristen is also the 2008 Salutatorian for Central High School and will attend Southwestern University in Georgetown this fall. Congratulations Kristen on this outstanding accomplishment.

BPA Students Place 3rd in Nation

Lake View High School students & faculty recently attended the National BPA Conference. Advisor Dusti Allen & Leanne Weaver attended with students Shivakumar Surendranath, Landon Forshage, & Thomas Backlund. Shivakumar Surendranath & Landon Forshage placed 3rd in the Nation in Web Application Team. Shivakumar Surendranath also competed in Graphic Design and Thomas Backlund competed in PC Service & Troubleshooting. These young men competed with the top in the Nation in these areas. Congratulations on this accomplishment.

BPA Students Place 2nd in Nation

Central High School students Shiv Chawla and Cody Thomas placed 2nd in the nation in Network Design team at the National Professional Business Professionals of America contest in Reno, Nevada. The team competed against each participating state's top two BPA qualifiers. Congratulations on this accomplishment.

Santa Rita Class Achives AR Success

Mrs. Watkins 3rd grade class at Santa Rita Elementary reached the Model and Master class goals in
Accelerated Reader from Renaissance Learning this semester. The requirements for AR Model and Master
Classrooms are keeping the class reading goals for 12 week and 18 week periods respectively where less
than 10% of the class is at risk and 80% of all reading is independent. The class received a banner and
windsock to show their achievement. Congratulations!

Holiman Elementary Recognized at San Angelo City Council Meeting

Holiman Elementary was recognized by San Angelo Mayor J.W. Lown at Tuesday's City Council meeting. The recognition was in conjunction with Teacher Appreciation week. Holiman was recognized for numerous awards and recognitions from the Texas Education Agency including being named as an Exemplary campus for the past two years and being named a Title I Distinguished School. Holiman principal Judy Bragg accepted the award on behalf of the school. She credits the hard work and love of Holiman's great students, parents, and teachers for this honor.

CHS Students Place 3rd in Animation Contest

Central High School students Andrew Cano, Abel Guzman, and Antonio Garcia were awarded third place in the Texas Computer Educator Association Animation Contest grades 9-12 for their animated short film, "The Tony Garcia Story". Over 600 entries by more than 1400 Texas students were received. Judges for the contest were composed of TCEA Members and professionals in these fields. The Texas Computer Education Association is dedicated to the improvement of teaching and learning through the use of computers and technology.

Glenn Teachers to Participate in NASA Educational Program

Glenn Middle School teachers Pam Abbott, Pam Duncan, Leann Herrera, and Laray Russell were selected to participate in the Middle School Aerospace Scholars program and will spend one week during the summer in a professional development workshop at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston. They will learn how to use NASA's educational resources in the classroom and develop an action plan to implement during the following school year. They will also experience behind-the-scenes tours of Johnson Space Center, briefings with scientists, engineers, and astronauts and receive instruction on utilizing numerous online NASA resources including training for the Digital Learning Network (DLN).
