Central High School Holds 2nd Annual Culinary Throw Down

On Friday, May 21, CHS Principal Bill Waters challenged four student culinary arts teams to a "throw down" in the school's culinary arts kitchen. Mr. Waters competed against the student teams for the championship title.

All teams were required to use shrimp as the main ingredient in the entrees they prepared. Each team also used the same surprise "secret ingredient," green olives, announced by Mr. Waters as the contest began. A panel of judges, including KLST week night anchor Carolyn McEnrue, SAISD school board member Max Parker, Lake View principal Matt Smith, and SAISD public information officer Jamie Highsmith, visited with contestants during the cooking process. Once the entrees were completed, the teams plated the food and served the judges, all of whom agreed theirs would be an overwhelmingly difficult decision.

The winning team of Erik Walsh, Shannon Carpenter, and Levai De Hoyos (last picture below)received championship cooking aprons from Mr. Waters, who was named runner-up.

CHS Campus Corral Staff Captures First Place

The Central High School Campus Corral newspaper staff placed 1st for the third consecutive year in the American Scholastic Press Association's annual review. Staff editors submitted the paper's best articles, editorials, art, and layouts to be judged along with over 2,000 other school newspapers. A review of the work provides feedback as to areas of excellence as well as constructive criticism for improvement.

CHS Key Club Captures Awards at District Convention

Twenty-six members of the Central High School Key Club attended the Texas Oklahoma District Convention held in Dallas last month.

The Central Key Club placed 2nd in the Service Fair for their "Safe Kid Coalition" booth and placed 1st in the Single Service Project: "Children's Miracle Network" by Emily Champagne. Ariel Erwin took 1st in the Jude Box Contest. First place honors also went to Michael Snyder in oratory and Jordan Hunt for the club's scrapbook. Thomas Blackwood received the Top Five Distinguished Outstanding TX- OK District Key Club Lt. Governor Award. Key Club President Jesse Martinez was awarded the T-O Kiwanis Foundation Scholarship and Kiwanis International Matching Scholarship. Martinez also received the Leader of Leaders Award. Central received the Diamond Level Distinguished Patch and the Governor's Project Patch for "READ" in addition to claiming the District Project title with "Color Our World". Of 309 clubs in the Texas-Oklahoma district, San Angelo Central High School Key Club received an 8th place ranking.

CHS Student Places 2nd at BPA Nationals

Genna Duncan, a senior at Central High School placed 2nd in the Interview Skills Event at the National Business Professionals of America (BPA) Conference. The conference was held May 8 in Anaheim California. Genna competed against 72 students from across the nation. Her BPA advisor is Sandra Godwin.

Congratulations Genna on this outstanding accomplishment!

Also placing at the National Conference were CHS students Steven Davison, Logan Peacock, Shiloh Culleton and Kim Usry who placed 7th in the Web Site Design Team and Marissa Saulnier, Tyler Thomma, Tanya Daughtry, and Jason Meyer who placed 13th in the Computer Animation Team Event. Their BPA advisor is Jon Marvel.

HOSA Students Headed to Nationals

A team of four SAISD Health Occupations students placed 1st at state competition in Houston. Central High School students Cody Majorowski-Cabezuela, Lexi Ries, Crysta Vercher, and Prima Sipin captured the top award in the Emergency Preparedness event. As national finalists, they will travel to Orlando, Florida June 23-26. The students will be accompanied by their instructor, Mrs. Griselda Arteaga-Menchaca.

CHS Students Chosen as High School Aerospace Scholars

Central High students Thomas Blackwood, Caitlyn Buck, Jaclyn Johnson and Emily Price have been chosen to participate in a one-week summer internship at the Johnson Space Center (JSC). They will join 346 other high school juniors from across Texas to be part of High School Aerospace Scholars. The experience at JSC includes a tour of JSC facilities and briefings by noted NASA employees including astronauts. The scholars will be part of a team that will design a human mission to Mars and participate in other hands-on engineering activities at JSC. These students and teammates will conclude their experience by presenting their design proposal to members of the Texas Legislature, Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, Rotary NASA, and JSC senior management.

FCCLA Chapters Place at State Meet

Art Students Place at State VASE Competition

The following students received a rating of 4 (highest rating possible) on their artwork at the State VASE (Visual Arts Scholastic Event) on Saturday, April 10th. Jessica Lamoy also received a Gold Seal, which is the highest honor possible at the State VASE. Only 150 pieces of 24,000 pieces state wide received the Gold Seal this year. Her artwork will travel around the state until November as a part of a special traveling TAEA art exhibit.

SkillsUSA Students Place at State

Ten SAISD students competed in the SkillsUSA State Competition March 24-27. Three students placed in the top three in the state. Olivia Briones, a senior at Lake View, took 3rd place in Cosmetology Skills. Samantha Ballard, a junior at Central, placed 2nd on the Esthetics Technical Exam, while Beatrice Perez, a senior at Lake View, placed 3rd on the Cosmetology Technical Exam.
