DECA Students Win at State

Students from Central High School competed at the DECA State Career Development Conference in Ft. Worth. The team of Elise Nalepka and Chandra Satterwhite won the Hospitality Team Event and will compete at the International Conference in Louisville, Kentucky in April. Congratulations girls!

FCCLA Students Place at Regional Meet

Central High and Central Freshman Campus Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America recently competed in the FCCLA Regional meet.

State Qualifiers from Central High School include:
Blake Shelton - 1st place - Serving Up Success
Yvonne Cuellar and Jordan Russell - 1st place - Life Event Planning
Taylor Contreras and Kersten Hoffmaster - 2nd place - Interior Design
Britni Brownfield and Haley Thomas - 2nd place - Illustrated Talk
Kaila Anderson and Amanda Medina - 5th place - Focus on Children

State qualifiers from Central Freshman Campus include:
Alexa Michulka, Jessie Flores and Samantha Martinez competed in National Programs - 1st Place, Junior level
Kameron Thomma, Vanessa Meyer and Cassie Palmer competed in Interpersonal Communications - 3rd Place, Senior level

The students will be competing at the state level in Dallas in April. FCCLA advisers are Bethany Blanek, Debra Decker, and Rita Frantz.

CHS Art Students to Compete at State VASE Competition

Central High School art students qualified to enter fourteen pieces of art in the state Visual Arts Scholastic Event (VASE), which will be held at the University of Houston, Clear Lake, on April 9. The qualifying competition was held at Central High School on February 6.

Artists include Claire Alexander, Sean Bailey, Tyler Barden, Josh Clayton, Holland Cogdell, Mallory Delacruz, Ceptember Evans, Alexandra Hernandez, Jessica Lamoy, Clovis Lindsey, Molly Martin, Katelyn Owens, and Blake Shelton. They are students of CHS art teachers Suzanne Horner and Joe Morgan.

Central Cheerleaders Capture National Title

The Central High School Varsity Cheerleaders captured their second consecutive first place win at the NCA Nationals competition held in Dallas on Dec. 28-29.

The squad includes Rebeka Bethune, Chaney Collins, Kristen Dawson, Sarah Jara, Tori Jara, Clovis Lindsey, Camille Studt, Katie Walker, and Tyler White. Their coach is Matt Escue.

Glenmore Students Raise Money for Earthquake Victims

5th grade students at Glenmore Elementary spent time in January raising money for earthquake victims in Haiti. The students and their teachers sold Blow Pops as their fundraiser. On Friday, January 29, they presented a check for $1,128.00 to the American Red Cross for disaster relief efforts.

Students Participate in Arbor Day Contest

Students from San Angelo ISD participated in the Arbor Day poster contest sponsored by Keep San Angelo Beautiful. The national contest, held annually, is open to all 5th grade students. Students from SAISD as well as other local schools designed posters to illustrate this year's theme - "Trees are Terrific ..and Energy Saving!" Students from Fannin Elementary created the winning posters for the San Angelo ISD division of the contest:

Adrian Guajardo, Pam Nwanguma's class - 1st Place
Carlos Ayala, Pam Nwanguma's class - 2nd Place
Viviana Ocampo, Caley Daniels' class - 3rd Place

Adrian Guajardo and Carlos Ayala also placed 2nd and 3rd, respectively, among all participating schools in San Angelo and will be honored this spring at the city's Arbor Day celebration.

CHS JROTC Competes at State Championship

On October 26, Central High JROTC School Drill Teams competed in several events at the state meet held in Arlington, Texas. The competitions included Academics, Regulation/Exhibition Drill for Armed Team and Regulation/Exhibition Drill for Unarmed Team, Saber Team Regulation Drill, Color Guard Team Drill, Physical Fitness Team, Uniform Inspection Team, and an Individual Cadet Drill Down event. Twenty high school teams from both Air Force and Army Junior ROTC units competed in the various events of the competition.

Central's meet results in team competition:

Inspection Team - 2nd Place
Saber Team - 2nd Place
Male Physical Fitness Team - 3rd Place
Female Physical Fitness Team - 4th Place
Armed Team Exhibition Drill - 4th Place
Color Guard - Male and Female Teams receive a combined score for 4th Place

In individual Drill Down competition, one hundred cadets competed. Central's results in individual competition:

3rd Place - Cadet Airman Clarissa Martinez

Bowie Elementary Hosts "Take a Veteran to School"

On November 4, Bowie Elementary honored veterans with a morning of special events on the campus. "Take a Veteran to School", which is sponsored by the History Channel, was organized by 4th grade teacher Lauri Herndon, who sent letters to parents asking for names of Veterans. The school received 300 names of veterans, which were placed on stars and hung in the Bowie hallways. Of the 300 names received, 50 of those were able to visit the campus.

The veterans were introduced on the "Patriots Live" morning show and led the pledges. Following the morning show, the veterans were escorted to each classroom by fourth grade student guides. Every student had an opportunity to meet a veteran. The veterans were from different branches of the armed services and fought in different wars, and their experiences provided a variety of interesting stories.

Bowie teachers prepared questions to ask the visitors, and some classes also presented thank you cards or letters. Others presented readers' theaters and dedicated poems.

The 3rd Graders performed their patriotic program during a breakfast provided by the teachers. The musical "American Celebration" provided a powerful and uplifting message of American history and the important role played by veterans.

Lake View Senior Attends NYLC in Washington, DC

Justin Parker, a senior at Lake View High School, recently attended the National Young Leaders Conference in Washington, DC. Justin was nominated by Mrs. Dusti Allen, LVHS National Honor Society sponsor.

During Justin's time in Washington, he participated in a small group setting during these events: exploring leadership in our nation's capital, national issues and the global economy, current issues and the news media, and a model Congress. Justin had the opportunity to attend committee hearings, leadership briefings and rallies, and also visited several Presidential and war memorials. Justin stated that one of the most outstanding features of the trip was hearing Senator John McCain speak.

Conference attendees experienced an in-depth, behind the scenes look at the people, places, and events that bring government to life.

Lady Cats Rally for a Cure Nets $12,000

The Central High Lady Cats recently held their 4th annual Rally for a Cure event, benefitting breast cancer research. The Lady Cats were originally looking at a goal of $5,000 this year, but Central Principal Bill Waters encouraged the team to "think big" and move the goal to $10,000. With the help of several campus organizations and proceeds from Rally t-shirt sales, the Lady Cats surpassed their goal. On October 21, the team presented the American Cancer Society with a check in the amount of $12,000, bringing the four-year donation total to over $23,000.
