SAISD Convocation Kicks Off School Year

August 22, 2014

"The Power of One” was the theme of this year's back-to-school convocation which was held Wednesday, August 20 at the Foster Communications Coliseum. The event welcomed all of the district's employees to the new school year and provided an atmosphere of celebration honoring each campus and department.

Brad Cohen, this year's keynote speaker, is an Atlanta, Georgia-based educator who shared his story of living with Tourette Syndrome.  Mr. Cohen, whose school years were very challenging as a result of Tourette, overcame the obstacles in his path to not only become a teacher but also to be named Georgia’s Teacher of the Year.  He is the subject of the Hallmark Hall of Fame movie “Front of the Class,” based on his first novel, Front of the Class:  How Tourette Syndrome Made Me the Teacher I Never Had.

During the event, Assistant Superintendents Dr. Jeff Bright, Dr. Carl Dethloff, and Shelly Hullihen brought laughter to the crowd with this year’s Western theme featuring cat herding and a special “Rawhide” performance, which included Central High Principal Bill Waters and Lake View High Principal Monte Althaus.

Other highlights of the morning included a combined Central High School and Lake View High School JROTC Color Guard as well as performances of patriotic music selections by combined high school bands, orchestras, and choirs.

Personnel from Goodfellow Air Force Base were special guests of honor.
