School Board Approves Bus Driver Pay Increase and Incentives

The San Angelo ISD School Board has approved a pay increase for all bus drivers as well as a hiring and recruitment incentive designed to attract additional bus driver candidates. 

There are currently 22 vacancies in the transportation department including 12 drivers, 9 Special Education Monitors, and 1 support staff. In addition, SAISD is transporting 99 more Special Education students than last year and will be adding 4 new bus routes to cover the increase in ridership. This will require an additional 4 more drivers and 4 more monitors. 

SAISD has taken multiple steps to attract candidates, but has simply not received enough applicants to meet the demands. 

In an effort to recruit more applicants, the board approved a $1 per hour increase to the starting pay of the four categories of bus drivers in Pay Grade 504 as well as equity adjustments for existing drivers in the Pay Grade. The starting pay of bus drivers will now be $14/hr. 

In addition, a hiring and recruitment incentive had been approved. New bus drivers will be eligible for a one-time, new employee hiring incentive of $500.00 to be paid in two equal installments of $250.00.  Current full time drivers, monitors, and mechanics will also be eligible for a recruitment/finder’s incentive for each new certified full time bus driver he/she successfully recruits to join the department. The recruitment incentive of $500.00 will be paid in two equal installments of $250.00.

SAISD will also be hosting  a tri-department job fair for those interested in joining our transportation, custodial, or child nutrition teams. The job fair will be November 1, 2018, from 4:30 to 6:30 pm at the SAISD Administration Building located at 1621 University Avenue. Interested applicants will be able to participate in on-site interviews.

Bus Drivers Requirements:

Pre-Employment

  • Criminal background check by fingerprint
  • Acceptable driving record
  • Drug test

Post-Employment

  • Class B CDL Testing Process
    • 4 written tests - general knowledge, air brakes, passenger, school bus
    • Complete a pre-trip walk, skills test, and driving test
  • Certification
    • 20-hour state certification
    • First aid/CPR
