September 16, 2019
On Friday, September 13, 2019 during a pre-game presentation, San Angelo ISD recognized Mr. Sonny Cleere for his contribution to San Angelo Central Bobcat football. Mr. Cleere, who recently retired as the “Voice of the Bobcats,” was the announcer for Bobcat football games at San Angelo Stadium for the past 38 years.
SAISD Executive Director of Athletics Brent McCallie presented Mr. Cleere with a football autographed by the 2019 Bobcats and a plaque of appreciation for his service.
Mr. Cleere called many great games in San Angelo Stadium, including epic battles between Central and rivals Midland Lee and Odessa Permian. The 2014 playoff game versus Arlington Bowie was the most memorable for him; the Bobcats erased a huge halftime deficit and won in overtime.
Mr. Cleere called games with great plays and outstanding players from both sides of the gridiron across the years including Cedric Benson, Roy Williams, Jack Mildred, Robert Griffin III, Shea Morenz, Cinco Howard, and Maverick McIvor.
“If you’ve ever heard Sonny call a game, he is going to be professional and impartial,” stated McCallie. “He’s a true professional, and his voice will be missed.”
