Program Furlough

A furlough is a temporary “leave of absence” from the Gifted and Talented program designed to meet the individual needs of an identified student. Anyone may request a furlough: student, parent, teacher, counselor, or administrator. Requests for a furlough will be given to the Director of Advanced Academics & Fine Arts. A student may be furloughed for a period of time deemed appropriate by the Gifted and Talented committee. At the end of the furlough, the student’s progress will be reviewed by the Gifted and Talented committee. At that time, the student may re-enter the GT program or exit completely from the GT program. It is not recommended that a student remain on a furlough for more than one year.

Program Exit

If an adult student, parent or guardian requests removal from the program, a written request from the student, parent, or guardian must be submitted to the Director of Advanced Academics & Fine Arts. GT students in grades 6-12 who are not enrolled in at least one Advanced Academics class will exit from the GT program after being furloughed for one year.

Please contact your student’s teacher, counselor, campus administrator, or the Office of Advanced Academics if you need additional information about the GT program at your student’s campus.
