Screenings

State Mandated Screenings

San Angelo ISD addresses state mandated screening procedures by conducting screens for vision, hearing, spinal (scoliosis and kyphosis) and Acanthosis Nigricans (AN).

Exclusion

Parents may exclude their child from the screening by providing the school in advance with the results of the screening done by a medical doctor. Parents may also exclude their child out for religious reasons. The parent or legal guardian must submit to the campus, on or before the date vision or hearing screening is scheduled, an affidavit in lieu of the screening record(s) stating that the vision, hearing, acanthosis, and/or spinal screening conflicts with the tenets and practices of a church or religious denomination of which they are member.

Annual Medical Exams

Screenings are not a diagnostic medical exam. This means that if your child does not pass a screening, it is necessary for him or her to be evaluated by his or her primary care provider for a medical examination. It also means that on some occasions a problem may exist that the screenings may not identify.

For these reasons, we encourage you to take your student to their medical provider for an annual check-up, no matter the outcome of the screenings. If you need assistance finding a medical provider, please contact your child's campus nurse or counselor.
