SAISD First Graders Gifted Books Thanks to Atmos Energy

SAISD First Graders Gifted Books Thanks to Atmos Energy

On Wednesday, October 5th, San Angelo ISD first grade students were treated to a gift of their own copy of “If You Give a Mouse a Cookie” by Laura Numeroff compliments of San Angelo READS! community supporter Atmos Energy. The giveaway is in support of the District’s community-wide literacy initiative, San Angelo READS!, created to inspire a love of reading and to encourage reading beyond the school walls.

“Atmos Energy is proud to support San Angelo READS! and SAISD, because we know how important it is to start reading early for the students. Atmos Energy loves fueling the minds of our future,” said Rochel Blakemore, Atmos Energy Manager of Public Affairs.

In celebration of the book giveaway and National Principals Month, Alta Loma Elementary Principal Lauri Herndon read the imaginative tale describing a set of events that occur after a boy gives a mouse a cookie that was streamed live from the District Facebook page for other SAISD classes to tune in as well as interested community members. The book was read with the permission of Scholastic Education. Watch the full video below or on the San Angelo READS! YouTube channel where more read alouds are available for viewing.

San Angelo ISD is thankful for community supporters of public education and the future of San Angelo like Atmos Energy, and extends our gratitude from the District and on behalf of our students. SAISD is working to provide a book to each of our elementary students this school year, and the support from community businesses, members and groups is very much appreciated. “Keeping students interested in reading helps build literacy and the comprehension skills important for learning. Atmos’ donation of “If You Give a Mouse a Cookie” not only made  reading fun, it is helping grow learning. I am so thankful for community partners who invest in our future, ” said Principal Herndon.

San Angelo READS!

The San Angelo READS! community-wide literacy initiative was founded by San Angelo ISD in 2020 to promote and encourage reading and the SAISD future-ready Learner Profile attributes among SAISD students and the greater San Angelo community. The goal of the literacy initiative is to increase awareness of the importance of literacy and to inspire a love for reading. This exciting initiative is driven by statistics which show how vitally important literacy is to providing all students with the opportunities to succeed at a young age. Children and teenagers who read for pleasure on a daily or weekly basis score better on reading and writing tests than infrequent or non-readers.
