SAISD Hosts 40 Volleyball Teams for Nita Vannoy Memorial Tournament
San Angelo ISD Athletics is proud to host our annual Nita Vannoy Volleyball Tournament today and tomorrow, August 1920, 2022, welcoming 40 teams for competitive play, including our Central High School Lady Cats and Lake View High School Maidens.
“We look forward to seeing everybody out and supporting all these athletes from across the state of Texas," said SAISD Executive Director of Athletics Rodney Chant. “We welcome these teams and their fans to San Angelo, and invite them to enjoy the great atmosphere of our community. Special thanks to our volunteers, workers and our coaches for the hard work they put in to pull together this first-class event- without them this tournament could not happen.”
Forty schools from around West Texas and the Panhandle will compete divided into 10 pools, including teams from as far as El Paso, Alpine and Plainview. Games will be held at 4 campuses in the district, Central High School, Lake View High School, Lincoln Middle School and Lone Star Middle School. Tickets are $8 for adults and $4 for students for Saturday, and $12 for adults and $6 for students for both days.
Teams play the best 2 out of 3 sets, playing to 25 points with a cap at 30 points. Friday play is on a pool schedule and Saturday will be bracket play with five divisions, with matches starting at 8am: Gold Division at Central High School (D gym), Silver Division at Lake View High School, Bronze Division at Lincoln Middle School, Bronze Challenger Division at Lone Star Middle School and Copper Division at Central High School (T gym).
The SAISD-hosted volleyball tournament has roots back as early as the 1970s, but was renamed in 2004 in honor of the late Nita Vannoy, a West Texas legend who taught and coached volleyball at Central High School. Coach Vannoy led several of her girls volleyball teams to be state contenders.
“Coach Vannoy definitely inspired us. She was very hard, but you knew she cared and wanted the best for you. I kept up with her after I graduated, and am so pleased that this tournament carries on her legacy,” said CHS alumni Julie Quam who played under Coach Vannoy and now works with the SAISD Athletics Department.
San Angelo ISD welcomes the opportunity to support UIL programs and our student athletes while benefiting the local economy. Visitors attending the volleyball tournament here in San Angelo may purchase goods and services from local businesses including eating and getting gas, which also means more money from sales tax for the community.
We wish our Central High School Lady Cats and Lake View Maidens playing in the tournament a fun and victorious two days of play! Sic ‘em Cats and Go Chiefs and Maidens! To stay up-to-date on San Angelo ISD, please visit the SAISD website at www.saisd.org and follow us on Facebook and Twitter.
