SAISD Second Graders Gifted Books through San Angelo READS!

SAISD Second Graders Gifted Books through San Angelo READS!

On Wednesday, November 2nd, San Angelo ISD second grade students were treated to a gift of their own copy of “The Dot” by Peter H. Reynolds compliments of San Angelo READS!. The giveaway is in support of the District’s community-wide literacy initiative, San Angelo READS!, created to inspire a love of reading and to encourage reading beyond the school walls.

In celebration of the book giveaway, Superintendent Carl Dethloff read the encouraging story about creativity, and how starting small can lead to big things to an engaged group of Fort Concho Elementary second graders.

“We cannot thank Dr. Dethloff and all our community partners for promoting and supporting  the importance of reading in our community! We want to encourage all parents to read with your children every day,” said Fort Concho Elementary Principal Lori Barton. “They grow up so fast and the simple act of reading to your child when they are young, will open all the doors they need to attain their hopes and dreams! Readers are Leaders!”

The read aloud was also streamed live from the District Facebook page for other SAISD classes to tune in as well as interested community members, with the permission of Scholastic Education. Watch the full video below or on the San Angelo READS! youTube channel where more read alouds are available for viewing here.

San Angelo ISD is thankful for community supporters of public education and the future of San Angelo, and extends our gratitude from the District and on behalf of our students. SAISD is working to provide a book to each of our elementary students this school year, and the support from community businesses, members and groups is very much appreciated. We also invite the San Angelo community to save-the-date for a celebration of literacy, our third annual city-wide San Angelo READS! Day: Wednesday, December 7, 2022.

For more information on how you can partner in this literacy initiative, email SAISD Communications Team at communications@saisd.org. Follow the San Angelo ISD Facebook, Twitter, and website, www.saisd.org/read, to stay up-to-date on San Angelo READS! Community members are encouraged to share how they celebrate reading through the hashtag, #SAISDReads.

San Angelo READS!

The San Angelo READS! community-wide literacy initiative was founded by San Angelo ISD in 2020 to promote and encourage reading and the SAISD future-ready Learner Profile attributes among SAISD students and the greater San Angelo community. The goal of the literacy initiative is to increase awareness of the importance of literacy and to inspire a love for reading. This exciting initiative is driven by statistics which show how vitally important literacy is to providing all students with the opportunities to succeed at a young age. Children and teenagers who read for pleasure on a daily or weekly basis score better on reading and writing tests than infrequent or non-readers.
